Christmas and Giving - A Different Meaning

I don't know about you but as I get older Christmas has a whole different meaning for me. It just isn't the same.

When I was young, I couldn't wait until Christmas because I knew my Mom would be baking great cookies, cakes and pies and there would be the smell of oranges and apples in the house. I had made my list for Santa Claus and I knew that I would likely get what I wanted. I looked forward to the Christmas program at church because at the end we always got a box of candy and a present.

When my kids were small, I tried to give them the same kind of memory as I had from my childhood. I baked and baked and baked. I made sure there were lots of different kinds of fruit in the house. I even simmered cinnamon on the stove to make the house smell yummy. Gifts, oh yes, there were lots of presents under the tree, even if I had to wrap one pair of socks per box. I wanted everyone to have lots of presents to open. We didn't go to church much but as my son got older he became involved and in turn so did I.

Today, it is just my honey and I. My son is with his In-laws and my daughter is AWOL. We slept late and watched the History International channel most of the day. We had waffles and bacon for breakfast and we have no idea what we will eat for dinner. Church service was on Sunday night the 21st and not on Christmas eve. How sad.

What is most important to me today, is not the presents because I have too much stuff. It is not having a big dinner and lots of people around the house. It is not having the Christmas Spirit. It is the fact that we have a Christmas to celebrate. It is the fact that Christ was born of Mary and then allowed himself to be crucified as an atonement for our sins. What is most important is that He lived, taught us how to live and then died so that we may live. This is the ultimate gift to have received and "is the reason for the season."

Hi - good insight into your personal changes - said from the heart - I can't help but feel the holidays are about as fun and significant as we make them... what ever it is we want - it's available someplace...may have to drive a little or try out something new - I love this time of year - and decide what I want to do and who I want to be with and do it. It does take time, planning and a commitment. The reward? Delight and fun for the entire season! For me - that's the spirit of the holidays.

Christmas we received the most beutiful gift of all our family and friends plus a wonderful story presented to us of our life as a family. It brought tears to everyones eyes. We then lit the candle and sang happy birthday to Jesus. The material items, nice but just that, material items.

A fine article Beverly, and one to which I can relate. My wife and I spent the day alone although we had gotten together with the family the Saturday before at a leased building. Our offspring now doesn't fit into anyone's home.

With this truth of the real reason for Christmas, we should be able to celebrate Christmas every day of the year. In fact, those who have faith in Christ do, in a way, celebrate Christmas year round. It's too bad that those in the World only see Christmas as a special time once a year, and even at that, they don't really understand.

We need more expressions like this! Some faithful gather in churches to sing, "O Come All Ye Faithful" while the merchants gather at the mall to sing, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."

hi beverly,

except for a few small details, i could have written this article myself.

christmas should be a joyous time for celebrating jesus' birth, but it makes it hard on those who can't afford much or are going through a rough time. thanks for sharing, and i hope you continue writing,
